What is a Listserv?
A Listserv is a way to communicate with a group of people via a single email address. When you send an email to the Listserv’s “reflector” address, the software distributes it to all of the group’s subscribers.
For example: staff@baytownisd.org
Using a Listserv in Smore
You can add a Listserv address to a Smore mailing list, but we don’t recommend it. Here’s why:
- Deliverability issues — We can’t guarantee successful delivery to every individual email address behind the Listserv.
- Limited tracking — Smore only sees delivery status for the one Listserv address, not the individual recipients. This means we can’t troubleshoot deliverability problems for people within the Listserv.
- Inaccurate analytics — You won’t be able to see individual recipient actions (like who opened or unsubscribed) in your Email Report.
- Unsubscribe risk — If one person unsubscribes from your newsletter, it will block the entire Listserv address.
Our Recommendation
Instead of using a Listserv, we recommend creating a contact list directly in Smore. This ensures:
- Better deliverability support (we can investigate and resolve issues for specific recipients).
- More accurate analytics (track opens, views, and unsubscribes at the individual level).
- Greater reliability for your communications.
